what we do

Accessible Formats

One size doesn't fit all

Page Bros is a leading provider of accessible formats in the UK.

Part of our full-service offering includes typesetting examination materials. However, standard exam papers aren’t always a good fit for everyone.

Some candidates may need an exam with a larger font, or different coloured font and background. Whereas other candidates may need the paper to be read to them using screen reading software.

We enable this by modifying our standard exam papers for candidates with various needs and abilities. Our modification services include producing Modified Large Print and creating Interactive PDFs.

Simplified formatting

Underlining and italics are removed and replaced with bold for emphasis, and text aligned left with a ragged right, with a larger line spacing.

Enhanced readability

We enlarge the font size of our standard exam papers so every candidate has access to an easy reading experience.

Improved comprehension

Targeting colour-blindness, we modify items such as pie charts and replace the colours with non-conflicting colours or patterns.

Modified large print

When producing modified large print, we create up to 4 versions of an exam paper using different font sizes in combination with different page sizes to cover all abilities (18pt, 24pt and 36pt text on a combination of A4 and A3 sizes).

Adapting to the candidate’s need, we remove all superfluous content, including borders, branding and anything non-essential that could distract them. Leaving only the content. We then re-flow the content to enhance readability.

This isn’t only helpful for examination materials; this service extends to modifying leaflets, flyers, or brochures to make them accessible for older age groups.

We fundamentally believe in inclusivity to allow every candidate access to equal opportunities, and that no candidate should be disadvantaged by being given something they cannot use.

Interactive PDF

Interactive PDFs move beyond the limitations of print. They provide the candidate with a fully digital experience.

An Interactive PDF benefits from all the advantages of digital media, such as: the ability to zoom in as far as needed, change the background and text colour to suit preferred contrast settings, and navigate with ease using bookmarks.

We also optimise the exam content for common screen reading software. The purpose of this type of Interactive PDF is that the user should hear what the standard paper user reads, so the experience is as consistent as possible.

We refer to these main interactive PDF features as form fillable and screen readable

What is a screen readable PDF?

Screen readable PDFs are created to provide a description of the major elements for candidates with visual impairment. These are created by applying alternative text and actual text to each element of the file.

Alternative text is used for images, diagrams, and graphs. Actual text is used to mitigate issues with screen reading software. For example, where a screen reader may read a sum as 4 hyphen 6, actual text would tell it to read as 4 minus 6.

Care is taken to ensure that descriptions merely eliminate the disadvantage and do not confer any extra advantages compared to the standard exam paper.

What is a form fillable PDF?

Form fillable interactive PDFs are designed to be answerable on screen. In every relevant area where a candidate would write an answer or check a box, we replace these areas with check boxes or fillable text boxes.

Form fields are set in place of answer lines and sized to give a candidate using an interactive PDF an answer space of similar size to a candidate using a standard paper.

Different widths and lengths of forms are employed for different circumstances, for example: calculation questions where a space for working and an answer space are required; answer spaces are embedded into diagrams, or full pages for working spaces.
